Cali’s butterfly farm

Capital of salsa, Cali has the largest diversity of butterflies in the world. Butterflies are one of the most effective bio-indicators of the quality and biodiversity of the ecosystem, an indicator of the simultaneous presence of different species of plants, animals, and a set of high quality environmental factors.

Comuna 18 is a marginal hill in the city without any connection to the popular tourist attractions. Its particular construction on a slope is based on the knowhow of the inhabitants.

The aim of the project is to create a permeable border (not a barrier) and help prevent the spread of the informal city in natural protected areas. This research seeks new ways of inhabiting the territory, based on productive activities and stimulation of creativity. Bamboo and butterflies are the main resources to generate socio-economic links with both the University of Biology and the Botanical Garden of Cali.
